Effects of large strain reverse loading on the strain rate dependence and dynamic strain localization of ductile metallic rods

Abstract The dynamic necking of ductile metallic rods with large strain reverse loading history has received little attention in the published literature. A novel bespoke real time control setup is constructed to apply directly specimen gauge section up a maximum level ± 0.16. 304L stainless steel used as model material this study. subsequent tensile tests loaded specimens are performed from quasi-static high rates 1000/s, using Zwick 050 Machine, hydraulic Instron 8854, and split Hopkinson tension bar speed photography equipment. initial flow stress shows similar rate dependence, regardless history. local during localization increases dramatically eventually reaches one order magnitude higher than nominal rate. significantly influences development instabilities, smaller inception, zone, failure.
